Dear All
As you know Cochin University of Science and Technology is organising UGC
sponsored National Conference on 24th and 25th of November 2009. Theme of
the conference is “ROLE OF OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARES IN LIBRARIES”.
Parallely
An international workshop on UNESCO’s *open source ‘Greenstone’ digital
library software* will be held at the Indian Institute of Management,
Kozhikode (IIM-K) from November 23 to 28. IIM-K Director Debashis Chatterjee
will inaugurate. V. Rajaraman, popularly known as the father of computer
science in India, will deliver the keynote address. Around thirty
participants, including those from Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, will be
admitted.
There is some clash of timings, even though the locations are different.
Anyhow these events are welcome and should be utilized by us to persuade the
strong grassroots library movement in Kerala to switchover to modern and
open source ways of managing Knowledge , both bookish and digital. In this
context I request all to approach the office bearers and library activists
they know, and persuade them to adapt FOSS. Our intervention will be
necessary as most library activists unfortunately are unaware of the fine
nuances of IT and software.
Please comment
Thanking you

Ashok
