Hi,
i agree with ur arguments and suggestions. Because, almost all the internet
cafes , DTP centers, Textile Shops, Hotels etc use windows. I think the main
cause of this is the lack of knowledge about linux and due to problems like
Hardware Support , technical knowledge etc. Most people are unaware about
the fact that Linux have powerful software tools like Scribus, Mozilla
Firefox , OpenOffice etc. I have tried my best to make people use linux, but
in fact ,  i failed to do so. Because people always think that linux is
something tough , even then i made several internet cafe's , DTP centers etc
use Windows versions of Mozilla firefox , OpenOffice, Scribus etc. They are
all satisfied about that. But whenever i tried to change them in to linux ,
if suffered from many problems such as hardware support problem.. I tried
FC10 in a system with nvidia chipset, and in that wide screen is not
supported and many more problem like this. But one think i have to say is ,
most home users supported me , because they found the multimedia, and
internet facilities etc very useful and powerful. But still , most of the
business persons use windows. My suggestion is that , we must provide enough
support for hardware, and those who get in trouble with their hardware
pieces and linux, we must encourage people to use linux in all the possible
ways.
        Another thing is IT education. As *Jos Collin* said our schools must
use Free software and they must include these sort of things in their
curriculum. But , still there are many other people , who are using Windows
, for their day to day needs. I think ILUG cochin should start an initiative
to spread linux among keralites. ILUG community should develop some
community maintained/developed applications, such as billing software,
device drivers etc. which may be useful in supporting our initiative to
spread linux technology. Every one of us should try to get people out of the
harmful addiction of pirated softwares. Everyone of us should give free and
open source softwares to our schools, colleges, friends , colleagues,
offices, relatives etc. Our students must be aware of free software
technologies like wordpress(joomla of course), live CDs, the freedom that
linux provides, GIMP etc. I felt that a program held by ilug cochin at SH
GHSS Muthalakkodam ( Thodupuzha ) was very useful for students those who
were interested in Web technologies like web site development, designing,
hosting etc. A team of five from ILUG cochin had guided students on
developing a web site using Wordpress.
Now, I hope for the best, that we ILUG people can do.
