I have been typing on a mechanical keyboard at office, and never thought of bringing it up in the thread (Compaq Deskpro keyboard). It has ALPS, not cherry switches.
The layout is quite of a plain 104-key kbd. There's no L-shaped return key to bug you (I *always* wonder why they name the Return key as "Enter", though they got it right in Macs).
The feel is good, though not as clicky as cherry switches. Its slim, not bulky, and not as big and beefy as HCL keyboard.
When scrounging for old/discarded HCL kdbs, try and see if you like old compaq ones too. I think when you pop out a key, ALPS switches initially make you feel you're dealing with a membrane keyboard.
Best wishes,
