Hi Hari,
Your mail not have the information about the network at college. So ask your network adminfor more information. If your  machine is connected to the internet using a router, no need for further configuration. Check that you have configured your network settings properly (if you get the internet then no problem else set Desktop->System->administration->network, Also make sure that the gateway address is correct). Now you can add repositories by selecting software sources. Select the server and then select the options and update the packeagelist.

An alternate way is open synaptic select setting and clik repositories. then select as previous.
