Agenda : MetaSploit Framework – The Ultimate Tool for Penetration Testing
The MetaSploit Project
The Metasploit Project is an open-source computer security project which provides information about security vulnerabilities and aids in penetration testing and IDS signature development.
Its most well-known sub-project is the Metasploit Framework, a tool for developing and executing exploit code against a remote target machine.
Metasploit was created by HD Moore in 2003 as a portable network tool using the Perl scripting language. Later, the Metasploit Framework was then completely rewritten in the Ruby programming language. In addition, it is a tool for third-party security researchers to investigate potential vulnerabilities.
Potential Uses of the Metasploit Framework:
1) Metasploit can be used during penetration testing to validate the reports by other automatic vulnerability assessment tools to prove that the vulnerablity is not a false positive and can be exploited. Care has to taken because not only does it disprove false positives, but it can also break things.
2) Metasploit can be used to test the new exploits that come up nearly everyday on your locally hosted test servers to understand the effectiveness of the exploit.
3) Metasploit is also a great testing tool for your intrusion detection systems to test whether the IDS is successful in preventing the attacks that we use to bypass it.
