Customary Self Introduction.
People shared their experience with Free Software.

2.45pm – 4.30pm

The main session started with the introduction to Intrusion Detection, the way in which it is approached by System / Network Administrators, the advantages and disadvantages of Intusion Detection, how it can be coupled with a firewall and made more effective. The methodology used are usually anomaly and signature detection, but still it may be difficult ot pinpoint the latest methods of attack.

We can have both a host based and Network based Intrusion detection system, as well as a combination of both, that is hybrid, normally there are limitations to both Host based and Network based systems and most administrators opt for the hybrid system, but it requires a lot high end systems, with various types of detection tools.

We can minimise losses through the use of intrusion detection systems, though it can not be a called a panacea for intrusion security, most companies spend a neglible amount of their finances on Intrusion Detection and end up losing valuable data and business, even without realising what has happened.
